Topic: English Teachers

My English Teacher is a Crazy Devil Woman From Hell

My English teacher this year is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. She has no concept of literature except in a skewed sense (she thinks Nathaniel Hawthorne was a great author) and she thinks the only right opinion is her own. Many a time I have stated a true fact only to be shouted down by the blubbering walrus who runs the class. When I told her the Scarlet Letter was a horrible book and the man who wrote it couldn't write worth shit, I think she had a cerebral hemorrhage. Now we are reading Huckleberry Finn, and all hell has broken loose. Suddenly everything in the world is sattire. Oh look! Huck fell off the raft again! That's sattire!   NO it is not. Everthing in the world is not frigging sattire. It is an adventure story, not a humor novel. She wants us to find deeper meaning in the book, and you know what I say to that? If you have to look intricately at a piece of literature to find what's funny about it, it isn't worth laughing at. Is this an isolated case of evil, or is it more widespread? Personally I think it is a sinister plot started by Bill Gates to make people hate books. But that is just me.

It is high time I put something intelligent here.

Re: English Teachers

Normally I would have responded with my usually 'you're an idiot' reply.

But... I read some of it.

And now all I have to say is: Your teacher is an idiot.

Re: English Teachers

she thinks the only right opinion is her own.

Yeah, her and everyone else. That's what opinions are. It's people that aren't open to new opinions who are the problem. And I think that's hers.

Re: English Teachers

Look on the bright side, atleast your fucking literature in School is so far based aorund Shakespeare that you'd think he wrote 90% of everything ever written (as it is in the UK). You have to do at in years 7,8,9,10 and 11, also at As level Language/literature and you will have to know a great deal about him in certain English degrees.
To any Americans that didn't understand that last bit, it means you have to do it all the way through high School and also the first two years of College if you take English as a subject.

I hate Shakespeare, he may of been a good writer for his time, but his work is now dated and there are far more relevant to today peices of literature that people could be taught in Schools.

As someone who's planning on teaching english in the future, i have to say that while it is required to teach Shakespeare by most school systems in the U.S., i will also be sure to point out that he was one of the the greatest plagiarizers of his era.  The simple fact of the matter is that he rewrote plays that had been around for hundreds of years before.

Oh and if you think shakespeare is boring wait until you have to read anything by Charlotte Bronte...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I may be the only one, but I disagree. Maybe she does accept opinions
other than her own, why dont you try offering one? Saying an author
is a horrible writer... is NOT opinion. You are stating a FACT that is
not true. You can hate an authors writing, you can hate their stories.
You can even hate their style. You can say the book is dumb, the
story sucks, or anything like that. But you must respect the author.
An author with a twisted style of writing, is an author showing
originality. An author breaking out of the ordinary, shows he/she CAN
write.

Also, many teachers will have you look for deeper meaning. Even if
it is not there. They want you to be aware that some authors do us
the hidden meanings. They want you to be able to pick up a book
read it, and understand it in whole.

Re: English Teachers

An author writing a book, IS WASTING TIME.

Re: English Teachers

maybe the teacher is not taking her meds or she needs a good one thrown into her...

I think he DID state an opinion saying the author couldn't write worth shit...how is it fact other than fact for his feelings about the writer's abilities?

I agree that teachers push students to delve deeper to find meanings...whether or not there are any hidden.

As for the Bill Gates Conspiracy Theory...please provide some evidence :-)  I would find that interesting...even just opinion wink

Re: English Teachers

I had to read Hukleberry Finn and make a fucking test about it. I had to name all different forms of symbolism, foreseeing and what not. It plain sucked ass, and I don't think that Mark Twain ever intended to menace students when writing his book. he just wanted to write a friggin story.

Re: English Teachers

My english teacher is insane. She's this heavily religious, balding, half-retarded lady who acts as if we are all good little Christians and we know nothing. She is constantly quoting the Bible roll , even when there isn't supposed to be religion in schools. She doesn't realize that there are Atheists in the room. It pisses me off.

She should burn in hell!!
