They talk about a select few things in each/all of there songs they are as follows:
1: "tapping some bitch" (as they would put it)
2: their "bling bling" (apparently this is jewelery and so on)
3: Going to jail/commiting crimes involving guns
4: a Gangsta's life? borrringg.

Well, it's still not a terribly favorable context, and from what I gather from some others it IS something quite offensive/serious, but anyhow... I would say that's okay (in a sense).

If your friends takes offense, why not oblige? You could tell him that you don't like the hypocritical political correctness, and that he is blak and that you therefore call him such, and that the term holds no intrinsic derogatory value nor does white. But if he still takes offense, I personally would say: very well... if you insist have it your way.
And I guess African American is a term that exists because NOONE wants to bother using a long phrase such as 'ethnically African, American' or something along those lines.
Furthermore, the rest of your post about language, laws etc. etc. have very little to do with the beginning of your post. (imho)
And actually, I think calling your white friend an African American ismore incorrect than called a black person an African American. Unless you maintain two nationalities, you stop being an African when you swap ur S.A. passport for a U.S. one. Such a thing does not hold for ethnicity obviously.
But ah well, there shouldnt be too many situations in which such terms need to be coined anyway.
