Re: Buying Houses

Houses are available only to those whom pay to play the game.  If you wish to get a house, you will need to pay to play.  Then you will need to as Veega mentioned, find one for sale.

Re: Buying Houses

Hrmm, having trouble figuring out whether it should be who or whom.
Is 'who/whom' the object of 'pay' or of the preposition 'to'?

When I read it as you wrote, with 'whom' it sounded wrong to me... but Ive never been one to take notice of ppl using who where whom ought to be used, so how it 'sounds' to me does not necessarily say anyting about correctness in this case. =P

Surely Lothar will clear this up for me, thank you in advance. =p

Re: Buying Houses

Crov, whom is used in place of an object.  You find the verb of the sentence, there are two possibilities, pay and play.  However, play is the infinitive form having 'to' in front of it, so it is pay.  Which would then show you that it is indeed the subject, so you should use who.  However, I don't write perfect English, I put things where I like them, take not of my commas.

Re: Buying Houses

Hehe, alright. Just that usually ppl use 'who' in places where 'whom' ought to be used (and I hardly ever notice) and now suddenly I saw 'whom' used where it seemed odd. So I wondered if I was so used to the double use of 'who' that I didnt recognize what was correct anymore or if it was actually switched.

Anyhow, thanks for the explanation. smile

Re: Buying Houses

It's been a few years since college, but I really want to say that whom is used incorrectly...If my memory serves me correctly, whom shouldn't follow a pronoun like "those" unless another noun follows....

I think for it to be correct, it would have to be something along the lines of..."houses can only be purchased by players, whom are citizens yadda yadda yadda...." or "houses can only be purchased by those whom are paying players......."

...I do have a bachelors in english. However, I work in the graphics department of my company which means I haven't exactly put it to much use in the past five years...So I might just be splitting hairs here.

Re: Buying Houses

Since I am not from The Netherlands, what is the predominent language (mine is supposed to be english, but I can spell for beans)?  If it is not English, how did you learn it; and why do you know it so well?

Re: Buying Houses

Hallo <-mage<-, in Nederland is de taal waarin mensen dagelijks informeel spreken, opgeleid worden en communiceren bij de uitoefening van hun werk Nederlands. =P

Heh, the only official language of the Netherlands is Dutch. As for how I learned it... I guess mostly through use. Online games, English in school, English on tv. (On Dutch television, all English language programming is subtitled. Whereas the Germans tend to dub stuff. Back when I was a kid, cartoons were also dubbed, though recently there appears to be a regrettable tendency to dub children's programming.)

My English proficiency probably can't be held to be representative of that of most Dutch people anyway. =p

As for Veega's comment, in school kids are taught English, French and German. I have to say though, that my ability to speak French and German are probably not much more impressive than my Japanese aspirations towards linguistic mastery. In other words, not very. I can read a German or French newspaper to some degree though, I suppose.

Re: Buying Houses

Since you learned it mostly through use and not just taught bye someone with a politically correct stand point, you should be better equipped to speak with people as english being their first language, n'est-ce pas?

If you read any of the posts you would realize I'm not french.  I just threw it in there to show my willingness to accept and try other cultures.  By the way, Barthalamute, <-mage<- = Uwillnome.  Also, you probably shouldn't correct my spelling if you are not atleast going to capitalize something.  Thanks Again.
