I think we need to find a way to keep these advertising accounts from registering. Something like an invite system, or something like that. If you have any other ideas...yeah...
Agreed. I have a phpbb v4 forum, and I have it set up that everyone that wants to post has to fill the form out and wait for an activation email. I could easily set it up so that you can only join if a member send you an email inviting you. It's a matter of click one check box out of three or four. Simple.

This forum is already set up requiring an e-mail. The fact that it requires an e-mail however does not delay it very much. Even if the delay were lengthened, they would still be spamming.
An invitation system will also not work. We can not only allow members via invites, we need new users to be allowed without knowing old users.
I agree the spam is a problem, but as of now, there is nothing that can be done. Maybe if Zer upgrades the forum, then something can be done.

Last time I tried something like that, I got my tonsils pregnant.
Well, I was thinking that you could give every member a certain number of invites, except for the spammers (because they will only invite more damn spammers). That way you would have to know somebody on the boards to get in. I've been on a few boards with this system, and it dramatically cuts down on the registration.
Not just the registration of malicious accounts though.
