Topic: Registration Key?

So I was thinking how other games make it hard to do illegal stuff on their games.

A registration key. What if, say; before logging on the game. youd have to put in a certain key that allows you to log certain accounts,you've set to it.. Once set, they cannot be changed.

Might seem a bit impossible to do, seeing as people own other peoples account and are able to login to other peoples account, but I think there is a way to fix that.. Which I didn't give enough thinking yet, but with our fellow forumers we might..

It would be helpful towards GMs/Ms to, instead of IP banning or Mute-ing an account, ban or mute their registration key.

How to get a key? you can sign up for one with an email registration which is limited to 1 key per email. You can still get around it then, im sure.. But it would help alot.. see it as an extra security.. You could also make the key take 15 mins before showing up in the mail..

This COULD be optional, for people who want to ensure their accounts and such.

i like the idea of a serial key, but that would have to be on a per account basis

what i would like to see is a computer recognition type thing so that the server notes when a strange IP or computer tries to log an account and asks for extra security  (such as a serial number)  that can only be given out once so that the person can be sure when they receive it they put it somewhere they will not lose it (maybe tattoo it on wink )

People can always create a new e-mail address.
One option would be Flash, tracking cookies, and IP to re-establish the ID were it unknown (main benefit of Flash is it's cross-browser and 'Clear Cookies' does not clear it --  this is not a well publicized feature, but that only benefits us for the scheme).
However, this would link people who created their accounts at their friends' houses.
Additionally, to comply with privacy laws we'd have to show a bunch of legalese about tracking to British players before letting them view the site, as surreptitious tracking is illegal there.
Thoughts?

As for the 'strange IP' idea, I will be adding a 'secret question' feature. If you log on from a different ISP (or country - haven't decided), you will have to go to the website to answer the question and unlock the ISP/country.

Hu you cant track a british person Why.Why is it drifrent for us and the Usa? that makes no sence

Privacy laws can vary greatly between countries, 'secretly' collecting data about people may be illegal in some places.

On the other hand I know Google Analytics does something similar to this (and much more comprehensive, in the sense of time a page was viewed, etc.), though perhaps if their data is anonymized it is no problem? I'll have to look into it. There would be a lot of value in being able to ban people not accounts.

any added security with a strange address would certainly be appreciated.

Zer, could you state what the issue actually is?  I wasn't able to make any sense of Mister Rob's original post.

While your flash cookies idea is interesting for uniquely identifying a person (or at least a machine), I read somewhere recently that Adobe's next release of Flash will provide an easy method for clearing them.
