Topic: To whom it may concern

It has come to my attention that the filtering and chat moderating system is in overkill. Players have been muted for words such as 'fkn' and for profanitys in the outside channels i.e (Yell, Noob), which defeats the purpose of having no restrictions on them.

As a paying customer and a contributing member of the faldon community at large, i deem this to be disrespectful and more importantly unacceptable. At the very least there should be an opt out system, for those that value freedom of speech. Not only are we faldon players, but we are human beings, and this is our human right under article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

I believe the ICCPR expresses it perfectly in that we should have "the right to hold opinions without interference. Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression".

Yours sincerely,

Re: To whom it may concern

Duel is right, a certain select few chat mods prey upon the players so they can have an excuse to mute.  There are supposed to be warnings before an actual mute, however, with some certain Moderators such as slayer1, choose to mute right off the bat and not even for avoidance of filter.  As a paying player myself, I am just blown away with how faldon has changed, the chat filter in my opinion is not only over kill, its stupid.  The chat filter was made to protect the weak minded and weak hearted from vulgarities and twisted statements, when in actuality; life outside of faldon is completely more fucked up than what is going on inside the game.  There should be an automatic filter with an on/off switch, if a player chooses to turn off the goddamn filter, so be it.  I understand this is private property and personal rights are out the window but there have been several occasions when I have personally been muted, and even fucking ip banned for absolutely nothing by GM Alumet.  Zer, read this and consider changing the policy, everyone who isnt an idiotic gm ass kisser will agree this filter is over kill and unnecessary.

Yours sincerely,

I appreciate your comments on this.

The point you brought up about alternative channels is a good one. I've removed the filter from those.
If the chatmod system works well we may not even need a filter; it's experimental, we'll see how it goes.

I am curious though,  which part of the filter is disrespectful? The goal is to tone down the blatant racism, etc. that tends to appear in broadcast.

As far as the United Nations goes, the game is hosted in America so you'd be better off quoting the US Constitution if making a legal argument. Wasn't Cuba heading the Human Rights Council a few years back?

That said, the game isn't government-run, so technically I'm well within my rights to censor it any way I want. I don't want to, and that is why it is restricted to broadcast. However, freedom of speech doesn't mean I have to give the KKK a megaphone.

I fully agree that the problem isn't particular words but what is being said. It's possible to be horribly racist and abusive to other players without using any 'bad words'. People do it to GMs and chatmods all the time. I need to come up with a good policy for chat moderation in general, right now it's very concentrated on the style of speech and not the substance.

Re: To whom it may concern

You say you have the freedom of speech ? well this is private property and if zer says no then its his rules; you say that then tell me why kids in school get detentions and suspensions for these types of threats and vulgarities that you people make and at the workplace why do people get fired for acting in such a manner? Don't get me wrong i swear, but as i said before i don't log on to faldon to harass people i don't know to attempt to get a rise out of them like a lot of you guys do.
To me; it seems like the only weak minded and weak hearted people are the ones complaining because they can't deal with change
People do care about scams because zer has taken time out of his day to help sort some of the recent situations out as I am one of the people he has helped, along with the help of rick and a player who I actually am honored to know and rewarded for helping me get my account back and situated.
Also you guys don't realize (or at least pretend to not realize) that most of the people being muted are habitual offenders that do it on purpose
You're arguing that the game should be allowed to be one big rage fest where harassing and swearing at people and name calling is supposed to be a game that a lot of people would want to play.  Then you say that anybody who disagrees is an idiot or an ass kisser? Get some real supportive reasons to argue your point, because i would LOVE to hear a real reason.

Juza, there are many ass kissers in this game, Hydr0 being the biggest, he always agrees with absurd comments that come from Alumet.  Please Juza dont turn into one of these, you just had your head up zer's ass, so theres an example right there.

Sincerely,

Re: To whom it may concern

What is disrespectful is that for as long as I have played, which is too long, there has always been the option for those easily offended, to go and click Enable Swear/Curse Chat filtering under the Parental Control. Now however management has deemed that we are unable to decide for ourselves, and has made a mandatory filtering system complete with moderation. I guarantee majority of players on this game are against the chat filter, AND majority are of age to make decisions for themselves in that regard.

I understand that new players may not know about that parental control system and to entice new players it may be best for filtering to be set on by default. There should however be an option to completely remove filtering AND chat moderation, and this is visible to only those who also choose to opt out.

Just like Google will not bow to China's censorship demands, neither will the King of Midgard!

Re: To whom it may concern

I actually was writing that before but zer must have been writing at the same time, otherwise my comment would have been first, i'm not agreeing with zer to agree, i have my own opinion but you apparently don't play any other games because in any other game you'd be muted for swearing / harassment / racism in any public channel, and then if it kept up you would be banned.
I still hear no real arguement other than wah wah wah i want to be able to swear call ppl the nword and tell people i had sexual encounters of several different sorts with your siblings and mom.  roll

Re: To whom it may concern

Duel, if you have the ability to build a semantic chat filter - one that filters out content based on its overall meaning taken within the context of the conversation, rather than just targeting single 'bad' words - I think Zer would gladly replace the existing swear filter with it and then there would be no need for chat mods.  In fact, if you were able to build said filter, I'd be willing to wager that you could license the technology out for tens of millions of dollars and land yourself a posh job in Microsoft or Google Research labs.

In the meantime, however, it is still the case (as Zer pointed out) that it's possible for a person to go on a racist diatribe without ever using the n-word, and thus moderators are their replacements.

Re: To whom it may concern

Mumblee, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever read. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this thread is now dumber for having read that. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

If you had taken the time or rather had the brain capacity to comprehend my post you would have realised that I was indicating no chat moderation for those that opt out of the chat filtering. Messages of those who have opt out will only be seen at all or in it's true form by those likeminded indivduals, while still being free to read what is said by those who have filtering/moderation on. In this case the opt out individuals would require no moderation only the opt in.

Can your puny brain understand?

Re: To whom it may concern

I've been giving this a fair bit of thought, and I have to agree with Duel on this. The chat filter that has been set in place, seems.. well silly. Especially if you tell us it's only in broadcast, you can say what you like in yell/newbiechat ect.

I have looked, and there is a checkbox under options, and it says "Enable Swear/Curse Chat Filtering" why is that not enough? And if it Really is to just get rid of racism, why not then just censor the racist terms? Then if anyone decided to be "cute" about shortening the term or going around the filter, then the chat mods can step in, or for excessive use of swearing or spam.

Faldon has been a place of many arguments, heated debates, ect. The game has always kept on going, and if it isn't broke, don't fix it. By putting this in place, you have pleased nobody. Nobody, aside from the "ass kissers" that have been made chatmods because of this, are in any way welcoming of this change to the community.

The frustration caused by this game via scammers, low % drops, pking, or just overall irritation from anything in game, people like to be able to vent that stuff. It isn't harmful, aside from maybe young minds, but swearing doesn't do anymore harm than the greedy nature and cutthroat antics of the game itself.

I really hope you rethink this whole mess of being a censor, everytime I log on I just hear people complaining about it. It shouldn't be headline news. People should be talking about improvements or new items or ideas. Yadda yadda

;TLDR

The chat censor is silly since it's only bcast that is filtered
The chatmods Do abuse their power, because you gave "firearms" to powerhungry eleventeen year olds.
If racism is the key, filter racism, not swearing, there is already a checkbox for it in options.

So let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me "V"

Re: To whom it may concern

I'd just like to say most of us "ass kissers" were approached by a GM not the other way around.

Re: To whom it may concern

I for one am sick of everyone listening to the ones agreeing and just agreeing more and no one is looking at the nay sayers point of view at all.  ALL the chatmods are agreeing with the current chat regulations cause they wanna stay chatmods, this just proves they are greedy and do not deserve it...  i take that back somewhat... i have seen insertname and maximus say they don't like the filter system yet they enforce it.   Any respectful faldon player would want that freedom back, to deny it is just kissing ass and trying to get undeserved powers so they can get back at those who they know will never get that power simply by association.

18

Re: To whom it may concern

RP Your argument makes no sense it is the ramblings of an idiot full of sound and fury signifying nothing. I care little for "power" or its trappings. I merely wish to enjoy a game where everyone is treated respectfully regardless of race or sexual orientation.. I have muted perhap 3 to 4 people at most and always give the miscreants 3 warnings. As well I did not seek the chat mod status, Mr Spy asked me if I would be interested. After a bit of thought I accepted. I believe that this is YOUR greed and lust for "power" speaking not any real concern about the game.

Faldon. An Excellent way to while away the day!

Re: To whom it may concern

RP you make the argument for naysayers look weak, as i have said i am always willing to argue but there needs to be valid points; none of which you have made. I won't argue your way that's for sure, because it is a pointless and asinine argument when all you do is throw around insults at one another.
You claim that its harmless and that you aren't abusive and then yet you behave the same way you have been posting your last couple of posts here; in game. Then its just always an ulterior motive for anybody who disagrees with you because they cannot possibly disagree with you? You and Duel called me ignorant in game, but what i just said about you; proves pure ignorance, to think that anybody who disagrees with you has something to gain by disagreeing with you is ridiculous..
People have opinions!? No way!

Re: To whom it may concern

Okay, well I take back the "ass kissers" remark, but I still stand by what I said before.

There was nothing wrong with swearing, excessive swearing yes. Maybe put a limit or a timer on a word.
Racism yes, that can be filtered. There is no need for it.

Nobody Anywhere wants freedoms taken away, it will always stir up problems, as does the system put in place to enforce the change.

Everyone will blame the people enforcing it, I don't have any problem with the chat mods, they do what they are asked, only problem is favoritism. That can't really be helped I suppose.

The game will not stop working if this stays in effect, I just think it's wasted energy, aside from testing theorys for a new client. If this is the case, then carry on~  tongue

Didn't mean to offend anyone, I typed a rant at 3am, kinda loopy. Love you all... no homo.

So let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me "V"

1.  Way to steal your rant from Happy Gilmore.

2.  Explain to me how your idea of "opting out" protects players who don't want to be harassed by people yelling racial epithets.

22

Re: To whom it may concern

I believe I already explained myself perfectly clearly, but I will take the time to further reiterate.

There could be a system whereby a player who has opt out, messages will not be seen at ALL by those who have opt in. In this case only other people who have opt out will see the messages, hence stopping harrassment by those who cannot tolerate it. The opt out people will still be able to see ALL messages by opt in people though.Only the opt in chat needs to be moderated using this sytem. Alternatively the opt out system just shows the words in its true from to others that have opt out but filtered to those who have opt in.

Re: To whom it may concern

Wu youre just a washed up american, with no purpose in life.  I was ip banned for saying HAHA by alumet, thats why i fuck with her.  Please, if youre going to log on after 20 years of inactive service get your shit right faggot.

24

Re: To whom it may concern

So, you've proposed two different systems here:

The latter of the two is basically exactly what we have here, with the ability to turn the filter off.  The former is basically just the same as going in a different channel.

It seems ill conceived to split the player base into two broadcast groups, given how small it already is.  The idea of being able to disable the filter is one that many have been proposing, and it seems like a fair solution in general.  Mods are still needed in that case, though.

Oh really Wu?  Were you?  Then you'd know I Was indeed ip banned for laughing at what Rastlin said to judy.  Nice job adding the pic as my avatar, i dont want your filthy faggot fantasies associated with me you tonsil tickling queer.
