Re: Who Killed it This Time?

I think Julie and spy need to get together on this and figure out what the hell he is doing to cause all the crashes. I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking this...

Re: Who Killed it This Time?

Well, since Julie doesn't do scripting, I think she'd be a bad choice at a person to "look into" what I'm doing. As far as why the server is crashing, or why it crashes:

Much of the scripting for Faldon is undocumented. Or, if documentation exists it is not readily available to those that need it. This combined with the fact that the server not have proper bounds checking often causes crashes. This means that if you supply a number which is "out of bounds" rather than warn you that you have supplied incorrect data, and rather than a function returning a failure, the server will simply crash. For example, it was once possible to crash the server by typing: gm x 999999999999. Now, note that this is an extreme, some crashes due to the bounds checking can happen with much more realistic numbers.

In addition to this, server crashes can occur from things as simple as typos, or missed commas. Providing an incorrect number of arguments to a function, for example, could cause a crash. Where as what should and what would normally occur in such a situation is a warning would exist and the script would fail to run. Missed commas are often caused by copy-pasting, or by making corrections to previously written segments of code where the selection may have run long, for example.

Plus, there are other problems within the game that could cause crashes which are completely unrelated to scripting.

Just outta curiosity here, what happened to the test server?

Re: Who Killed it This Time?

This might be a silly question! The server used to reboot itself after a crash why has it stopped doing so? sad

The nub GMs on there keep killing it every time Zer boots it. He seems unwilling to remove them so I've stopped asking him to reboot it.

There's different ways the server can crash. Sometimes (like now) it just hangs other times the actual process dies. If the actual process is dead then it should reboot but that doesn't seem to be the case right now.

This sounds like you're more defensive than anything. It's hilarious that I was just discussing your programming ability in another thread prior to you being identified as the person crashing the server.

It seems the collective agreement is that everyone would like you to stop trying to fix things (or break them in your case).

Angeldust,

Angeldust,

You know, I agree it's funny, we were just discussing in the other thread how you need to strengthen your logic, and then you come in here and use your "collective agreement" as proof that I was the cause of something.

First of all....  Don't punish us because of something Zer won't do lol, tell that lazy ass to reboot the server big_smile

As far as "nub GMs" killing the server all the time...  I don't like missing out on my hourly faldon fix, but at least something is being done.  Have you tried talking to said GM about it?

Re: Who Killed it This Time?

nub scripts crashing the server?
send them to fatty I am sure if there is an issue with the script he'll figure it out.
either that or hell just eat it.  yikes
normally i might be offended at the mentioning of something hanging; aside from my genitals
let the faldon server hang
if faldon was a phone call itd be a telemarketer and it should have been hung up on a long time ago  smile

That's not true lol.  There have been 3 crashes, iirc, between the month long crash and this one, each of those lasting anywhere from 1-4 days wink

Re: Who Killed it This Time?

The fact that there is even being attempts to fix a game that has no future is what confuses me.  If Zer doesn't care about this game why is there being attempts to "improve" it.  Has anyone even attempted to confront Zer about claiming ownership of the game and actually bringing it to life?  I know little programming but plenty of you do, so why don't those of you that are current GMs that have made game adjustments and improvements just bring the idea to him.  He can't be collecting that much from the few people that still have C so it's not really making him money.  Make him an offer.  Ofcourse if he doesn't like the offer you can call Fireborn,  I hear he has a good tactic in persuasion.
