Topic: Not working for anyone?

Is anyone having trouble with the newest patch? I don't see a large number of crash reports, but I noticed the number of people online about halved.

Re: Not working for anyone?

A lot of people that were afk last night, got dropped off from server instability. The server stayed online, as someone reported their pets were where they left them, yet the server dropped everyone's connections for some time.

This was reported in the community discord. I was way asleep when it was going on and wasn't logged in when it happened either.

The server instability has kept people logging back in at times, for almost an hour(so far), and has done this at least a few times.
I have heard you are working on correcting this soon. Thank you. And I hope everything goes smooth.

Not trying to beat the dead horse, but a friend of mine stopped playing because of the lag. Not sure if anyone else has done the same. It can be frustrating at times. I know your working on it, but just wanted to add this to give you the full scope. Thanks.

Re: Not working for anyone?

Interesting. I was trying to make a remote backup copy of the main hard drive last night and the night before. I know that drive has bad sectors, and it seems like when it hits them, things get... slow... I was able to back up the vast majority of the drive, but the rest would never read.

As to sending new hardware for the server, the Postal Service was supposed to deliver the SSDs yesterday (replacing two 15-year old hard drives), and now it's stuck at "Alert: Awaiting Delivery". We'll see if they lost the package. Glad I paid insurance for it.

Re: Not working for anyone?

This is great news(except the postal delay). Thank you for the transparency on the situation.

Wow, you got 15 years out of these hard drives, you got your moneys worth. What brand are they? WD, Seagate, etc? Just curious.
I usually buy WD for Spinners and Samsung for SSD. Other than the hickup they had with the 980 pros, I think they have the highest or one of the higher reliability ratings. Unless its changed since last time I looked.

Everyone hates seeing those postal delays, and that is completely understandable. It is becoming more common it seems, especially with amazon orders. I am away from home for another month, staying on the side of the mountain, and any orders I do takes an extra 2 days. But at home in suburbia, it still gets delayed every once in a while too. Its likely it will come by Monday I would suspect/hope.

We are all here as your biggest fans to the new future of Faldon, and some of us want to help it be a success. Maybe we can talk further into this sometime in the near future. I would like to see what direction you would like to take it, and help where I can.

Re: Not working for anyone?

The OS drive is Hitachi. When we first set up this server, I'd actually put the OS on a SSD, but it failed in the first month. Hopefully SSDs are better these days. (To be fair, on the Desert Map version, we had a Maxtor hard drive. 1 year warranty. It failed entirely at 1 year and 1 day. So this problem doesn't only afflict SSDs...)

The data is on two Western Digital drives, "Caviar Black 750GB", in RAID 1.

The Hitachi has some bad sectors. The Western Digitals may as well, but they're using LVM so it's not clear to me if the errors just happen silently. But everything is slow.

Re: Not working for anyone?

Hitachi! Wow! Yeah, SSD's 15 years ago were probably garbage, just new tech and at that time, modern beta testing. It really started getting good 5-10 years ago. More like when the Samsung 870s were released(if you want to look that up). Now most are solid from decent brands, but sometimes still issues here and there, like everything else.

Gotta love that 1 year and 1 day failure. It could have been planned failure lol. It was probably less traceable back then. I don't know much about Maxtor, but I haven't heard of them if they are a brand. They are long gone now. Sounds like a cheap Chinese made fuel pump I was pressured into buying. I wont do that again. It was a year and a month or so, and dead.

Good to know Raid 1, and WD black was probably the right choice. Could even upgrade with similar current ones, and still be good how things are now. With my experience, its good to replace hard drives around 5 years. You can get further with Raid setup, but it also depends how important the data is.

Thanks for the insight on everything. It is cool to hear the hardware side of stuff, and awesome to hear that your server has definitely served you well! : )

It's nice, but as long as my cases have drive bays, I gotta lug my 8tb raid over to the new build.  It's never been touched in the 5 years since I built this machine, but you never know...

Re: Not working for anyone?

Pennywise, I've gotten a few crash reports from you. They all seem to be relating to taking a screenshot.

By any chance, do you not have a C:\Users\faith\Pictures directory? It's trying to save there and failing. Wondering if there's something more to this or that's the entirety of the problem. If you don't have it, what does Windows use when you click Pictures?

Thanks!

James

I do and there's screenshots there.  I also get a crash if I hit the print screen button with the client running.
