If it leads to the ability for the player to have more control over their GUI layout, size, and (in my dreams)skins, would be a huge boon for me - even if it's years down the line. I feel I constantly struggle against the current layout due to how much gameplay real-estate gets covered by GUI elements(particularly chat).
In retrospect I liked chat having a tab, or at least not being always on-screen. We moved away from a tabbed interface at the bottom because it doesn't extend to different screen types. But I do wonder, as what stops the 'paper' behind the tab from being either (1) extremely wide and cropped, or (2) tileable. *shrug* Chat really does get in the way. Something for another day, maybe.

I liked the tabbed interface for chat only, the pop up is superior for everything else. The issue is more that the messages for the server messaged (damage done, time, many interactions) pops up above the chat in the field of play, or even over NPC windows making both illegible.
On old client the server messages were off to the bottom left side, that seemed to rarely get in the way. It would be nice if they were back there.
The bigger issue with the chat box itself is that it's often times illegible against different backgrounds. Try reading chat on the desert map for example, it's a fairly difficult. I think a gradient behind the text area, like we have for the tool tips would be scalable and a lot better. Maybe a dark gray color.
I think also making it so you have to click the chat icon to activate the chat input initially would be optimal as well, as sometimes you accidentally input text instead of perform the ingame action for the corresponding key. I think it should function roughly as it does now with a minor tweak - Click once fully expanded chat box, click twice condensed chat box, click a third time, chat fully dissapears *including* the input bar.
One consequence of redoing the GUI code, actually, is that ListBoxes such as chat can change width. (It tracks the scrollbar by item instead of by pixel.)
My plan (once all the bugs in the new GUI code are worked out) is to make "fully expanded" chat full screen, dimmed game area.
The chat box issue can be greatly reduced simply by moving the chatbox to the top left of the screen. I believe Haggy made these changes through config files and posted screenshtos on discord.
