Topic: 1337 Sp3ak Help

OK this is so damn lame but im doing a Unit called Game Fundamentals at Uni and the topic this week is on 1337 Sp3ax0rs i kid you not. We actually have to talk about this crap.

I wanna know if anyone has an idea of where this "Gamer Speak" originated from and how it has evolved.

I'm opening up a shop that sells 13" rulers just so Fireborn stops complaining.

Re: 1337 Sp3ak Help

Re: 1337 Sp3ak Help

Ive heard that it evolved froom hackers who didnt want their messages read easily.

Re: 1337 Sp3ak Help

Yeah im pretty sure it originated from hackers.

One theory i thought of is that they used to hack billboards and only had a simple like calculator display to put their mesasge on so they had to make up words that worked.

Mind you, we have no idea what to look for at the wikipedia page.

Modern cyberspace is a deadly festering swamp, teeming with dangerous programs such as''licensed Microsoft software'' that can take over your computer and render it useless.

Re: 1337 Sp3ak Help

"1337" speak is a way of hiding what you say. Not from people
but from machine. It is a way of speaking where people can
understand, but scanners can not. However, it is more used to
show how "Cool" you are, and because of this has become
considered very lame. People often use it to try to prove
their computer skills, which they more than likely lack, otherwise
they would have nothing to prove.

Re: 1337 Sp3ak Help

I thought it just started in CS, cause one of the models is called Leet Crew. Or is that just how the word "leet" started? I don't know.

Mind you CS is a mod for HL2 so the name "Leet Crew" is probably something that came after all of the original leet speak terms.

Re: 1337 Sp3ak Help

Most of it came for CS (Counter Strike) A Half-life mod which is CT's vs. T's. Most of the "uber 1337 pro" phrases came from it. "gg" also came from it. tongue

Re: 1337 Sp3ak Help

1337 and all the phrases from logical reasoning started from shorthand
when people started using shorted phrases such as lol for laughing out loud and gg for good game, i believe that they decided to explore the realm of possibilities. this spawned the theory that since short hand was easy yet different, how about changing a few letters around for coolness. or...

the most basic definition yet
some kid wanted the same screen name as another kid but couldn't so he just made the character with the name only with different characters
~M~A~G~E~, ~M~4~G~E~, ~M~A~G~3~, ~M~4~G~3~

or, it may be just a invention by a player, i remember a kid who started calling something and eventually, it was used by others, i think it was calling lobsters lobbies or something

or as a addition to the shorthand comment, it may be initials that looked cool

Re: 1337 Sp3ak Help

They do not consider the use of extreme short forms (such as "b" for "be", or "u" for "you") as leetspeak; instead, they refer to it by such terms as "AOL speak"

who stuck that in? such a monopoly i say...
