Topic: Question about external hard drives

I was thinking about getting one because at the moment I have a 40gb internal HD, and it's already overflowing with mp3s, I have to backup the mp3s I can't fit on the computer to DVD constantly. But my question is; would an external hard drive be too much hassle to keep all my mp3s on and  keep it connected to my computer whenever I want to listen to music from my computer?

Re: Question about external hard drives

backing up to DVD is always a decent idea, but I think external HDs are pretty convenient
you cna just plug em in ur USB port and have em connected to ur comp 24/7
and mp3s wont give any access speed problems. Anime  avis didnt even give me any access speed probs, so smile

All I would advise is to make sure you pick a reliable brand,, you DONT want it crashing on you. I regret ever buying this Maxtor I have. It died twice on me.

Instead of a big stationary external HD you could also try a HD mp3-player. I recently purchased a Sony NW-HD5, which is pretty nice. But if you want more space look at the iRiver series or perhaps if you're really that lame, try an ipod. =p

I wouldn't get an iPod because 40 gig (this is the largest size you can get for a mp3 player at the moment, to my knowledge) isn't enough for me to hold my mp3s. And another reason is because all the fucking twats who live around my area use their mp3 players to be 'cool', and I don't want to be like those fucks.

But thanks for the info, I guess I'll get an external hard drive because that seems like a more convenient and better idea than waiting to get a new computer...

Re: Question about external hard drives

indeed, and you can use it on ur new computer too. smile Still, that's a lot of MP3s. I bet all my mp3s, take about 20-25 GB total. Obviously I could get a lot more, but I wouldnt listen to it prolly.

Well, number 1: Ipod comes in a 60 GB edition, Photo or non photo.
And you are cool! I love you kiss huggzors

60 gigabytes still isn't enough. And 60GB iPod costs way too much... I can get  a 200 gb external harddrive for half the price. Also, an iPod isn't the best solution for my situation - I prefer to listen to albums on my portable CD player than to mp3s on an mp3 player and if I got an iPod, it wouldn't be great to hook up to my computer 24/7 just to play mp3s from...

Re: Question about external hard drives

For the price of an external hard drive you could buy a 200gb hard drive and get it installed somewhere (if you cant do it yourself)

It will be cheaper in the long run to buy an internal HDD and get it installed than fiddling with an external hdd...also the speed will be faster.

You can pick up an internal 200gb WD hdd for about $110 and a place shouldnt charge you more than $30 to install it.

p.s. Make sure you have Windows Service pack 1 otherwise anything over 120gb wont register~

But it will be better to get external because whenever I get a new computer, I can just connect the external HD and I will have my winamp playlist with the same directory and stuff... it will just be easier. And if I bought a new internal HD then I'd have to install ALL the current programs and fix all the settings I have at the moment... which would take ages, and be boring as dick.

And I won't really be fiddling with it often, I'll just leave the HD connected to my computer basically 24/7.

Just install the new one as a second hard drive.  Your computer should have 4 IDE plugs (two plugs in the mother board, then two plugs on ribbon).  Thus, unless you aready have a bunch of CDROMs or HDDs, you should still have room for a new internal to work as an auxiliary.

Re: Question about external hard drives

Spectre said it all really but if you are planning on upgrading your computer and cant perform the HDD installation yourself then yeah an external drive is probably your best option.

It would not be a hassle at all. Unless your desk-area is poorly
set up. I would suggest you go with the external if the purpose
is solely MP3.. That way if you ever need to go somewhere or
something you can take them with you.

Externals have their advantages and disadvantages.  One main disadvantage is speed. :

Re: Question about external hard drives

tongue Well... you COULD by an internal.. and build yourself an
external casing for it.. lol Though, that would still need plugged
in internally, unless you make a case-mod..

Re: Question about external hard drives

Well how is the speed like? I heard that external HDs are 5200 RPM or something. Is there a major difference between that and a 7200 RPM? But I don't think speed will bother me, as when I first put all my mp3s onto the HD, I can just go afk for an hour or however long it will take. I just need to know whether the mp3s will be 'jumpy' if they are played from the external HD from winamp on my internal HD.

No, they shouldn't.

Re: Question about external hard drives

Ok, so it's decided; I will get an EXTERNAL hard drive.

Now I just need to see what type... supposedly Maxtor is unreliable, so I was thinking Western Digital? Are Western Digital HDs good?

20

Re: Question about external hard drives

I had no problems watchings divx encoded anime episodes from my external HD connected through USB 2.0. Should be faster if you have like firewire or sumat.

I think Western Digital is decent, but haven't had experience with em much. I remember Coma told me once he reckons that Seagates are indestructible.

Re: Question about external hard drives

They cost a fair bit more though... hmm

Re: Question about external hard drives

the HDD spinning at 5200rpm or 7200rpm isnt what spectre was talking about.

When connected internally they are connected via an IDE or SATA connection which will be much faster than a USB1.0 or 2.0 connection.

Blah Blah Blah Blah

Once all the MP3's are on it your fine.

Oh also Seagate are better but for your purpose Western Digital are fine.

I prefer Western Digital over all else.

Cool, thanks. WD are also cheap compared to the other ones.  big_smile

Re: Question about external hard drives

If I were you I'd get a seagate. Maxtor crashes constantly and I've never had any problems with the Western digital in my Pc, but all that's on that is my OS. All of my apps and programs are on my Seagate and It hasn't crashed once. However, all of these have been internal drives so I can't say anything for the quality of the externals provided by these companies.

Re: Question about external hard drives

An external HDD is effectively an Internal HDD in a case.

There is no difference that im aware of between the 2 hard drives.

XTTZ try a place called "MSY" they are in umm near Chadstone shopping centre and also in pascoe vale.

They have arguably the cheapest computer part prices in melbourne.

Be prepared to wait though cause normally they have at least 10 people lined up  lol

They also have a dodgey website www.msy.com.au
