To give up; relinquish: quit a job.
To abandon or put aside; forsake: advised them to quit their dissipated ways.
To cease or discontinue: asked them to quit talking; quit smoking.

When you say something like 'quit smoking' it could be, stop your habit of smoking, or... stop smoking right now. (Like... if someone is sitting in ur house and suddenly decide to light a cig while there are kids in the room or whatever, something which could also be met with 'quit it' I suppose which has a similar temporary nature in this context.) At least, that's how I feel the interpretation could be. Also you keep assuming more and more, first you said he would come back, now you're saying and kind of implying it won't be too long before he will either, ah well... who cares anyway.
